World Sexual Health Day
In 2010, the World Association for Sexual Health called on non-governmental organizations to celebrate every 4th of September as World Sexual Health Day in an effort to increase awareness around the issue.
The theme for 2016 was “Sexual Health: Eliminate the myths!” which focused on acknowledging sexual health myths and eliminating them with accurate, relevant and scientifically based information.
ELEGIR participated in the World Sexual Health Day campaign in the Ejido de Peña Blanca and El Paredon communities. Community members received information on program services such as initiatives to prevent violence against women, care for survivors of violence and psychological attention for the general public.
ELEGIR tackled the issue of intimate partner violence through the “Love Lottery” activity where participants shared myths about healthy and abusive relationship behaviors through a fun and dynamic lottery game facilitated by psychologist Alma Karina Barbosa Cervantes. Doubts that were expressed about what is and isn’t love were discussed and clarified. At the of the end of the activity, the group was able to define the characteristics of a stable and healthy relationship as well as those that are harmful.
