The sex education is essential, said the president Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador (AMLO) in his morning press conference this Thursday, when questioned about the contents of the new education reform.
“Regarding sexual education, I believe that it is necessary, it is indispensable, that it should not be omitted and that we must transmit information to adolescents and, if necessary, to children. That there is a formation in that sense, scientific”.
He noted that the sex education it must be rational and attached to knowledge and science, not mixed with matters of faith or dogmas.
“That is my point of view and it has to be solved by the experts, pedagogues”.
Asked if teachers could receive training to teach sex education, the president Lopez Obrador He said that it is already included in the study plans of the Normal Schools and it would only be necessary to reinforce it or revise the teacher training plans.
Among the countries of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), Mexico ranks first in adolescent pregnancy, in addition to the fact that young people may be exposed to contracting sexually transmitted infections.
Derived from the educational reform approved during Enrique Peña Nieto's six-year term, free textbooks were published that teach the definition of homosexuality (attraction to people of the same gender), bisexuality (attraction to people of both genders) and the how gender is socially constructed and how gender is not necessarily what people identify with.
Regarding what will be the contents derived from the new education reform, AMLO said that it will be pedagogues, not pseudo-experts, who determine what will be taught to children in schools. He said that there are very good pedagogues in Mexico who will freely prepare these programs and will convene them for that purpose.
“We must try to reinforce civility, ethics, history, everything that was put aside during the neoliberal period. It has to be a humanist education, with that common core. And of course advanced in science, in the natural sciences, in mathematics, but with a base in humanism, do not neglect that”.
He reiterated that during the neoliberal period they sought to erase history and that is a contradiction, because those who do not know where they come from, do not know where they are going.
