Maternity Clinic

On September 2, 2025, Alejandro González Rullán, president of the board of directors of the Mexican non-profit organization Centro para los Adolescentes de San Miguel de Allende (CASA), signed a contract transferring CASA's maternity hospital to IMSS Bienestar to establish Mexico's first Center of Excellence in Midwifery and Wellbeing under the national regulation NOM-020-SSA-2025.

The government-owned and funded Center of Excellence will provide free primary care and midwifery services for low-risk births, train students and health professionals nationwide, and collaborate with universities and international organizations to ensure high-quality, culturally relevant care. CASA built its hospital in 1994 and donated it to the federal government after three decades of service in recognition of Mexico’s strong commitment to integrating traditional and biomedical practices into healthcare and expanding midwifery at the primary and secondary levels. CASA is honored to contribute to this national effort alongside the federal government and numerous partners and will collaborate with IMSS-Bienestar at the Center of Excellence as a volunteer advisor.

We thank the national and international community for their generosity, commitment, and collaboration with CASA over the decades and look forward to continuing our vital partnership. We thank the local workers who built CASA Hospital and salute all the staff who participated in the services provided at the Hospital for more than 30 years. CASA's other educational, cultural, and health services remain available at our Community Center at Santa Julia 15, Colonia Santa Julia, San Miguel de Allende. What was the Midwifery Clinic?

Our Midwifery House in San Miguel de Allende was a space that, for 30 years, promoted the sexual and reproductive rights of the population and provided various services related to comprehensive health care.

It primarily offered services based on the Midwifery Model, in which trained, certified, and licensed midwives accompanied, guided, and cared for women during vital stages of reproductive life, such as pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period. In addition, together with a large multidisciplinary team, it was dedicated to providing information and services at affordable prices.

Every woman has the right to choose where and how to give birth, accompanied by whomever she prefers.

(always accompanied by the professional team).

In 1994, the CASA Maternity Clinic was inaugurated.

Where an interdisciplinary team of traditional midwives, professional midwives, obstetric nurses, physicians, and specialists work together to ensure that women receive the best treatment with dignity and respect. One of Casa's main goals was to provide formal and comprehensive education to traditional midwives in the San Miguel de Allende area.

In 1997, the first officially recognized school of professional midwives in Mexico was created.

During its operation, 17 generations of technical midwives graduated, bringing the total number of graduates from 12 states in Mexico and 3 countries to 120.

More than 11,000 babies have been born at CASA's Maternity Clinic.

With excellent results, with transfer rates lower than 4%, and mortality, maternal, perinatal, and low birth weight morbidity rates lower than 1%, demonstrating the effectiveness and efficiency of the midwifery care model.
