XHSMA 92.1 Code of Ethics

Chapter I

PURPOSE. This Code of Ethics establishes the principles, objectives, values, duties, and obligations that guide radio station XHSMA-FM's relationship with society through responsible conduct. It includes guidelines intended to prevent behavior that could harm society or damage the reputation of XHSMA-FM.

Chapter II

SCOPE. For the purposes of this Code of Ethics, a Contributor is any individual or legal entity that broadcasts content through station XHSMA-FM.

Chapter III

ACCEPTANCE. XHSMA-FM requires its contributors to follow the principles established in this Code. Contributors must also ensure that all their officers, employees, and directors follow it. Anyone who joins XHSMA-FM as a contributor in the future, along with their officers, employees, and directors, must expressly accept this Code of Ethics in full, particularly its principles, objectives, and values.

Chapter IV

GENERAL PRINCIPLES. In providing information, broadcasters undertake to: • Inform the public accurately, thoroughly, and impartially about important events and issues.

• Present news and information without distortion. Interviews may be edited provided their meaning is not changed or distorted. • Broadcasters' newsrooms must take steps to verify the authenticity of all video and audio before broadcasting, including news material obtained from the public, freelance reporters, and other sources. • Acknowledge errors promptly and correct them. • Treat people who are the subjects of news with decency and sensitivity, especially children. Strive to act courteously and considerately, gathering information as discreetly as possible. • Avoid distorting the nature or significance of events. • Clearly distinguish editorial contributions and commentary from news reporting. • Keep broadcasts within the bounds of respect for private life, personal dignity, and morality; do not infringe the rights of others, encourage criminal acts, or disturb public order and peace. Radio must be a responsible space for information, entertainment, culture, and community life. Broadcasters undertake to heed the recommendations of the Audience Ombudsperson appointed by XHSMA-FM and to work with that person to address audience complaints and observations.

Chapter V

HANDLING INFORMATION. • Content must be free from prejudice. Every school of thought must be represented appropriately. However, impartiality does not prevent the legitimate adoption of editorial positions. Wherever possible, media must distinguish information from opinion and advertising or propaganda. • Inform the public clearly, accurately, and thoroughly, citing sources and respecting copyright at all times. • Verify reported facts as far as circumstances allow. Whenever possible, gather information firsthand; otherwise, seek witnesses. • Reflect the cultural diversity of Mexico and the world through pluralistic programming that presents different perspectives and a variety of content.

Chapter VI

NEWS COVERAGE OF VIOLENCE. • Media must condemn and reject violence driven by organized crime, emphasize its negative impact on the population, and raise social awareness against violence. • Avoid the language and terminology used by criminals. • Refrain from misusing legal terms in ways that make judicial proceedings against organized crime harder to understand. • When reporting crimes or alleged unlawful acts, handle information in a way that prevents criminals or suspects from becoming public victims or heroes, since this helps them build a favorable image, makes their actions seem acceptable, and may encourage imitation. • Omit and reject information supplied by criminal groups for propaganda purposes. Do not become an instrument of, or participant in, conflicts between criminal groups. • Reporting on organized crime must attribute responsibility for violent acts to those responsible. • Information presented by the media must respect the rights of victims and minors involved in violent incidents. Never disclose information that puts their identities at risk.

Chapter VII

PROGRAMMING. • This media outlet will always respect each person's race, nationality, religion, sexual orientation, marital status, and physical or mental disability, referring to such characteristics only when relevant and essential to the clarity of the news and when they add value for audiences. Avoid stereotypes. • Ensure that content is appropriate for its intended audience and broadcast time. • Avoid expressions that promote discrimination or are intended to offend, taking the intended audience into account. • Always respect the right to honor, intimacy, and privacy, especially for children and adolescents. Exceptions may apply when the conduct of a public official affects the general interest or when information is of public interest.

• We will follow, at a minimum, the criteria and standards set by child protection laws.

Chapter VIII

RIGHTS OF AUDIENCES WITH DISABILITIES. To achieve genuine equal opportunity, audiences with disabilities have the following rights: • Recognition of their abilities, merits, and skills, and of their need for consideration and respect. • Accessible mechanisms for submitting claims, suggestions, and complaints to audience ombudspersons, provided these do not place a disproportionate or undue burden on the media outlet. • Access to the radio station's programming guide by telephone or through its websites in formats accessible to people with disabilities.

Chapter IX

PROTECTION OF CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS. In protecting children and adolescents, contributors undertake to: • Seek to share information and materials of social and cultural interest to children and adolescents, in accordance with the educational objectives in Article 3 of the Constitution and the Convention on the Rights of the Child. • Avoid broadcasting information that contradicts those educational objectives, harms children's well-being, or conflicts with the principles of peace, nondiscrimination, and respect for all people. • Seek to share information and materials that guide children and adolescents in exercising their rights, support healthy development, and help them protect themselves from dangers to their lives or health. • Avoid encouraging children to imitate behavior that is harmful or dangerous to their health. • Avoid using personal and family conflicts as entertainment. • Raise awareness of childhood issues among all professionals involved in preparing programs. • Encourage presenters and hosts of live programs to identify situations that may affect the protection of children and adolescents, minimizing any potential harm.

• Support children's balanced development. • Provide entertainment and contribute to children's education and development. • Programs and advertisements unsuitable for children and young people must be identified as such to the public at the start of the relevant broadcast.

Chapter X

THE AUDIENCE OMBUDSPERSON. The Audience Ombudsperson serves as a mediator and link between viewers or listeners and the media. To properly perform the duties granted by the bylaws, the ombudsperson must follow the principles and guidelines set out in this Code.
